![]() The 13 th Amendment to the United States Constitution states that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” The amendment was passed after the United States had fought a bloody civil war between territories that had supported the institution of slavery and the territories that had opposed the institution of slavery. Last week, President Obama celebrated the anniversary with a speech on modern slavery and human trafficking. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified by the required number of states on December 6th, 1865.
